The Paulding Light — Upper Peninsula

Watersmeet

Mysterious Phenomenon High Activity

History & Paranormal Activity

At the end of Robbins Pond Road near Watersmeet, a light appears every night that has defied scientific explanation for over a century. It rises from the tree line, bobs and sways, changes color from white to red to green, and approaches observers before retreating. A 2010 University of Michigan study concluded it was car headlights on US-45; detractors note the light was documented in photographs from the 1940s before US-45 was built, and its behavior — reversing direction, splitting into multiple orbs — is inconsistent with headlights. The legend says it's a railroad brakeman still waving his lantern.
