Lake Quanapowitt — Wakefield
Wakefield
Mysterious Phenomenon Low Activity
History & Paranormal Activity
Lake Quanapowitt in Wakefield carries a persistent local legend of a phantom canoe seen on the water at dusk by multiple generations of residents. The canoe carries a lone paddler who traverses the lake from north to south and disappears into the southern shore. The lake was a significant gathering place for the Pennacook Confederacy, and the apparition is generally interpreted as a spirit from that period. Dozens of independent sightings have been recorded since at least the 1850s, making it one of New England's most consistently reported water phantoms.
