Eastern State Penitentiary — Cellblock 12
Philadelphia
Asylum / Hospital High Activity
History & Paranormal Activity
America's first true penitentiary, built in 1829 and inspired by Quaker reforms, became one of the world's most copied prisons and one of its most haunted. Al Capone served 8 months here; his cell is considered the most active location, with his apparition seen sitting in the bunk and the sound of jazz music recorded by investigators. Cellblock 12 — abandoned the longest — is where a locksmith during a 1991 restoration first reported seeing a cackling face materialize on the wall, an encounter that began the site's transformation into a paranormal destination. Shadow figures, ghost faces, and cackling laughter are standard occurrences.
