History & Paranormal Activity
The Altamaha-ha — 'Altie' to locals — is a serpentine river creature reported in the Altamaha River since the 1700s, when Tama Native Americans first described it to European settlers. Modern witnesses describe a creature 20–30 feet long with a alligator-like head, front flippers, and a tail that churns the water. Multiple boaters and fishermen have independently reported seeing the creature surface near Butler Island. The Altamaha River system, one of the most biodiverse river basins in North America, hosts species new to science as recently as the 2000s.
